Carolyn Nelson


Carolyn Faye Wilkes Nelson was born July 28, 1953, in Pine Bluff, Ark. She was the daughter of the late J.D. Wilkes and the late Mary Holmes Wilkes. She was baptized at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Robert Dickerson, Sr., and later joined Grace Temple Baptist Church with her husband and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for many years. Later in life, she attended The Institute of Divine Metaphysical Research.

She had a love of caring for others which began as a Candy Striper at Jefferson Hospital, now Jefferson Regional Medical Center, in Pine Bluff. She graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1971 and continued her studies at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She also attended Pines Vocational- Technical School, now Southeast Arkansas College (SEARK), where she received a Certified Nursing Certification. She also attended Texas A&M University, Texarkana, Texas, and graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. She worked for the Arkansas Department of Corrections for many years and retired from that institution as a Captain.

Carolyn enjoyed spending time with her family and many, many friends. Her special talents included arts & craft, gardening, and cooking. She loved entertaining and feeding anyone who walked through her doors.

She departed this life March 8, 2013, in Jackson, Miss., at Central Mississippi Medical Center. She was preceded in death by one brother- John Christopher, and one nephew, Brian Smith.

She married Dwight Nelson, Sr., and to that union, three children were reared and loved. She leaves to cherish her memory, her children- Delneta Moore (Steven) of Texarkana, Texas, Mechelle Nelson of Little Rock, Ark.; son, Dwight Nelson, Jr. (Kellye) of Jackson, Miss., and a special daughter, Carmen Johnson (Fred) of Pine Bluff, Ark.; four brothers, Richard Wilkes (Rose), Anthony Wilkes (Janice), Melvin Wilkes (Joyce), and Henry Wilkes (Felita) all of Pine Bluff; four sisters, Patricia Dixson, Sherry Smith (Alveno), Betty Burnett (Jeffrey) all of Pine Bluff, and Priscilla Benjamin (Henry) of Chicago, Ill.; four grandchildren, Jocelyn Bullard, Darion Simon, Darius Nelson, and Nakiya Nelson. She was also a grandmother to Alesha Lee, Krista White and Brittany White, and great-grandmother to Heaven White, and Alonzo Clowney. She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, March 16, 2013, at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Melvin Smith officiating. Burial will be in Cypress Memorial Gardens by the P.K. Miller Mortuary.

Visitation will be held at the mortuary from 5-7 p.m.

Mrs. Nelson will lie in repose at St. Paul from 1 p.m. until service time.
