Carlbert Brewer

DUMAS — Carlbert James Brewer was born November 10, 1945 in Dumas, Ark., to Adolphus James Brewer, Sr. and Elizabeth Williams Brewer. “Carl” as he was affectionately called by his family and friends and “James” as he was called by his wife’s family, was the third child born to this union.

Carl received his formative education in the Dumas community. He graduated from Reed High School in 1963. He received a bachelor’s degree from AM&N College of Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1967 with a major in Mathematics. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in 1983 as well as a Specialist Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and was licensed by the State Board of Education in School Administration in 1990.

His teaching career spanned 38 years in the Dumas School District. It began at Reed High School as a math teacher from 1967 to 1970, transitioning to teacher and vice principal at both Dumas Junior and Senior High until 1993. He was principal at Dumas Junior High from 1993-1998, and was principal at Dumas High School from 1998 until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators, Arkansas Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Arkansas Education Association and the Dumas Education Association. He also served on the Southeast Community Action Board, the Dumas Community Center Board, and the Dumas Area Arts Council. He was an active member of the Delta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, a service organization. Carl was an active member of St. Peter’s Rock Church at Dumas for many years. He accepted the calling to the ministry in 2010, preaching his first sermon at St. Peter’s Rock Church. His ministry lasted only three short years. In January 2013, he became a member of Greater First Christian Center (formerly Greater First Baptist) at Pickens in January 2013 under the leadership of Elder Willie Gordon. He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Jerilean Kinlow Brewer. He leaves two brothers: Adolphus James Brewer Jr. (Faye) of Jacksonville, Florida and Oliver James Brewer (Betty) of Dumas; and one cousin who his parents raised, Valerie Brewer Greene (Andre’) of Dallas, Texas.

The service will be held at the Bethlehem Worship Center, 509 Highway 65 North, Dumas, on Friday, April 26, at 11:00 a.m. The body will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. until service time for public viewing. The wake will be held Thursday evening from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Greater First Christian Center at 138 Pickens Road, Pickens. The Reverend Willie Gordon, Pastor, will be officiating. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial Lawn at Varner. Services are entrusted to Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff. Expressions of Sympathy may be posted at
