Mr. Benny Ray Austin, age 67, of Pine Bluff, died Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 22, 1945 in Monticello, the son of the late Manso and Charlene Austin.
He was a graduate of Wilmar High School. Ben served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a Master Mason of Pine Bluff Lodge 69. He worked for 35 years in the oil industry around the world and retired from Pride Oil Co. of Houston, Texas, where he had been based in Chad, Africa, in 2010. Upon retirement he devoted his time to a small farming operation, which was one of his lifelong dreams. He was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying both hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; Deborah Lynn Austin of Pine Bluff, three sons; Benny Ray Austin, Jr., Dennis Austin (Monica), both of Pine Bluff and Richard Hankins of Forrest City, four grandchildren; Ashley Austin, Brittany Austin, Sheila Griffin (William) and Crystal Huff (Brian), five great-grandchildren; Michael, Hunter, Mikie, Aleigha and Austin, two brothers; Don Austin (Maxine) of Las Vegas, Nev., Charles Austin (Nina) of Fin Castle, Va., and five sisters; Betty Funderburg of Warren, Ruth Lain of Sheridan, Shirley Handley of Arcola, Miss., Martha Jo Shields of Greenville, Miss., and Gloria Pennington (Duwayne) of Wilmar, several nieces, nephews and many other family and friends. And of course, his beloved canine companions; Henry and Sugar.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 14, 2013 between the hours of 7-9 p.m. at Griffin Funeral Service with the funeral service being held Friday, February 15, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., also at Griffin Funeral Service, Rev. Kenneth Worbington will be officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Yorktown.
