GALESBURG, Ill. — Mr. Arthur “Champ” Wilburn, 80, of Galesburg, Ill. died at 11:30 pm Saturday, December 8, 2012 in Knox County Nursing Home Knoxville, Ill.
He was born June 24, 1932 in Pine Bluff, the son of Willie and Della Moten Wilburn. He married Shirley B. Morrow on January 22, 1952 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death in 1985.
He is survived by three sons, Sanford Spec Wilburn of Galesburg, Ill. Arthur Ross Wilburn of Iowa City, Iowa and Charles Wilburn of Pine Bluff; three daughters, Gloria J. Abron of Galesburg, Ill. Monica M. Carter of California and Terry L. Duffy of Galesburg, Ill. and his sister, Julia Mae Thurman of Flint, Mich.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife and two brothers, Willie and Henry.
He retired from J.I. Case International Harvester in East Moline, Ill. in 1991. He also had worked for Butler Manufacturing. He graduated from Merrill High School in 1950. Arthur was a professional boxer. He served as a boxing manager and referee. He was a four time Illinois Golden Gloves Boxing Champion at Lightweight. Arthur loved to perform magic tricks. He was a member and an usher of the Second Baptist Church.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Johnnie Trammell will officiate. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Online condolence may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
