Federal grants to fund improvements at NLR veterans’ cemetery

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock has been awarded two federal grants totaling $1.1 million, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced Monday.

The money will be used to develop about two acres and fund construction of columbaria, landscaping and supporting infrastructure. The project will include 720 columbarium niches and other minor improvements.

The money also will be used for the raising, realignment and cleaning of headstones and for turf rehabilitation. It will pay for work on 2,951 headstones and about 279,000 square feet of turf.

Gov. Mike Beebe is scheduled to attend a grant presentation ceremony at the cemetery on Thursday.
