Child found underwater at swimming beach dies

MOUNTAIN HOME — A child found submerged at a swimming beach in Baxter County died early Monday, the county sheriff said.

Six-year-old Frankie Lyn Tollen of Mountain Home died at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, Sheriff John F. Montgomery said.

Authorities said a U.S. Army Corp of Engineers park ranger alerted sheriff’s deputies just before 3:30 p.m. Sunday that a child had possibly drowned at the Cranfield swim beach at Lake Norfork. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, the child had been removed from the water and CPR was being administered by an off-duty Baxter Regional Medical Center emergency room employee who was at the beach, the sheriff’s office said.

The child was transported by ambulance to Baxter Regional in Mountain Home and later to Children’s Hospital, where she died about 5:45 a.m. Monday, the sheriff said.

The report said family members began looking for the child after she failed to return from the restroom. She was found submerged in about five feet of water.
