ADEQ to hold hearing on proposed steel mill


LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality said Tuesday it will hold a public hearing on a draft permit for the Big River Steel mill in Osceola on July 30.

The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. in the Osceola High School cafeteria. ADEQ technical staff will be available to discuss the draft permit.

ADEQ staff have already reviewed the proposed permit and granted it tentative approval.

Earlier this year, the Legislature authorized a package of incentives, including a $125 million bond issue, to bring the a $1.1 billion steel mill to Arkansas.

Big River Steel has said the plant it proposes to build in Mississippi County will employ more than 2,000 workers during construction and more than 500 permanent workers with pay averaging $70,000 a year.
