A Drew County forest fire burned more than 500 acres before it was contained Thursday evening.
Firefighters across Southeast Arkansas and two Arkansas Forestry Commission aircraft battled a forest fire near Wilmar throughout the afternoon and early evening. The two aircraft reloaded eight times each, dumping more than 16,000 gallons of water on the blazing fire.
An ambulance on U.S. 278 near Wilmar was on standby while firefighters battled the forest fire on the south side of the highway.
Meanwhile State Police blocked U.S. 278 from Interstate 530 and County Road 133 at Wilmar.
