McGehee man dies in house fire during mother’s wake, officials say

MCGEHEE — A 61-year-old McGehee man died in a house fire Monday night while his wife was attending his mother’s wake, according to Desha County Deputy Coroner Leroy Emerson.

Emerson said when he arrived at Roy Louis’ home on Sonya Lane, firefighters had already extinguished the fire. Louis was pronounced dead at 7:25 p.m.

Louis’ mother, Dollie Mae Smith, of Rohwer, died on Sept. 5 and his wife was attending her visitation service at Griffin-Culpepper Funeral Service Chapel in McGehee when Louis died in the fire.

Emerson said he doesn’t know what caused the fire.
