Two killed in separate traffic accidents

Two people were killed in separate traffic accidents in Jefferson County in a span of less than 24 hours starting Thursday night.

Johnny Ray Carter, 59, of Jefferson County died Thursday night after the motorcycle he was riding crossed the center line on Stagecoach Road and hit an oncoming truck head-on, authorities said.

In the second accident, a male who has not been identified pending notification of family was killed late Friday morning when the log truck he was driving overturned near The Pines mall in Pine Bluff.

Sheriff’s Department Major Lafayette Woods Jr., said the accident involving Carter was reported at approximately 8:25 p.m. Thursday. The driver of the other vehicle was identified as Adam Harter, 27, of Sheridan.

The preliminary investigation indicated that Harter was trying to negotiate a curve when he saw the motorcycle that Carter was riding cross into the eastbound lane. Deputies said Carter was unable to get back into his lane before the crash.

Woods said Harter was not injured in the accident, and the investigation is continuing.

In the accident near the mall, police spokeswoman Regina Vontunglen said the truck was exiting off Interstate 530 onto East Harding Avenue when the driver apparently lost control and the vehicle turned over, with logs spilling onto the embankment.

An investigation into that accident is also continuing by Pine Bluff police.
