DUMAS — A Dumas couple was killed Thursday when the vehicle they were in was hit by a train while attempting to cross the track at State Police Road and U.S. 65 in Desha County.

A preliminary report from the Arkansas State Police identified the victims as Billy R. Persons, 77, and Patty S. Persons, 70, both of Dumas.

Trooper Clayton McWilliams reported that the 2010 Ford Edge driven by Patty Persons was northbound on State Police Road and turned east, attempting to cross a marked railroad crossing and failed to yield right of way to the train that was traveling north.

The train engineer, Stephen Ballard, 56, of Beebe was not injured.

The accident was reported at 7:32 a.m. and McWilliams reported that the weather was clear and the roadway dry at the time.
