Suspect in alleged theft from vehicle arrested Monday

A Jefferson County man who was identified as a suspect in the theft of a cell phone and other items from a parked truck last week was arrested Monday at a motel on Dollarway Road.

Shawn Douglas, 24, allegedly broke into a truck that was parked in the 5400 block of Flipper Street on May 9, Deputy Prosecutor Maxie Kizer said during a court hearing for Douglas Wednesday.

Detective Mike Sweeney said in a probable-cause affidavit that the owner of the truck told police he came out of the house and saw a man later identified as Douglas getting out of his truck and getting into another truck before driving away.

Kizer said the victim told police that a cell phone, GPS and a handgun were missing and when Douglas was found at the motel, he gave officers permission to search his room.

Sweeney said officers found a cell phone that was identified as having been taken from the alleged victim. Douglas allegedly told police he had given the handgun to a person he owed money to.

Kizer said Douglas is a convicted felon and had been charged wit numerous failures to appear in court in Ward, Warren and Pine Bluff.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $25,000 bond for Douglas after ruling that prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with breaking or entering, theft of property and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Bridgforth appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent Douglas and told him to come back to court June 26.
