State Trooper finds reported stolen vehicle, arrests driver

An Arkansas State Trooper who stopped to check a vehicle on the shoulder of the road on Interstate 530 Friday afternoon arrested the driver of the vehicle after a license check indicated that the vehicle had been reported stolen.

Cpl. Brad Spurlin said in a probable-cause affidavit that the driver, Blaire Brown, 18, told Spurlin that he had run out of gas and a family member was on the way with gas for the vehicle, a 2000 Ford Expedition.

Spurlin said in the affidavit that he ran a check on the vehicle’s license plate and learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Texas earlier in the day.

The stolen report also listed a cell phone and clothing items that had been in the vehicle and those items were located when Spurlin checked the vehicle, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, Brown, who is from Fort Worth, Texas, said he had bought the vehicle for $850, and Spurlin said the value of the vehicle was $3,800.

During the court hearing for Brown on Monday, Deputy Prosecutor Maxie Kizer said a computer check of Brown indicated a number of prior offenses in Texas.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $25,000 bond for Brown after ruling prosecutors that had probable cause to charge him with theft by receiving.

Brown said he would hire his own attorney and was told to come back to court June 17.
