Reported burglary in progress leads to arrest


A reported burglary in progress at the former Bonanza steakhouse, 2922 S. Olive St., Thursday night resulted in the arrest of a man who allegedly ran when police arrived.

Hakim Shabazz, 42, was allegedly trying to pry open the back door of the facility when he saw police, Deputy Prosecutor Rik Ramsey said in a court hearing Friday.

Detective James Williams reported that police chased Shabazz through a muddy ditch before he was caught behind a house in the area.

Ramsey said Shabazz had an extensive criminal history including convictions for forgery, theft of property and commercial burglary.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $25,000 bond for Shabazz after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with criminal attempt commercial burglary.

Kearney appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent Shabazz and told him to come back to court Nov. 16.
