Police warn of text scam seeking bank account numbers

Pine Bluff police have issued a warning to residents about fraudulent attempts to obtain banking information of victims through the use of text messages.

Lt. David Price said in a press release Tuesday that the department’s Detective Division is investigating cases involving texts indicating a “Bank Alert” with no bank name indicated. The message will give the phone number (870) 277-0233, and Price said if that number is called, a prompt will ask for the bank account number.

If that bank account number is entered, the criminal will have access to the victim’s account and can take their money.

Price said the telephone number is that of an innocent party whose number has been compromised.

“Legitimate banks do not operate this way,” Price said.

Price said anyone has been a victim of the scam and lost money should contact the Detective Division at 730-2090.
