Police arrest teen in Sunday slaying

A 16-year-old boy was arrested late Monday morning in connection with the shooting death of a Pine Bluff man Sunday night.

Capt. Skip Elliott said the boy, whose name was not released because of his age, is being held on probable cause of first-degree murder at the juvenile detention center.

William Roby Jr., 21, was found with gunshot wounds when police were called at about 8:35 p.m. to the area of 3009 S. Ash St., according to Lt. Denise Richardson of the Pine Bluff Police Department.

Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley said Dr. Michelle Eckert pronounced Roby dead at about 10:36 p.m. in the emergency room at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Kelley said the body was sent to the State Crime Laboratory at Little Rock for an autopsy to determine “cause and manner of death.”

Elliott said the 16 year old was identified as a suspect in the shooting and was brought to the Detective Division by his parents where he was questioned before being placed under arrest.

No weapon has been recovered and a motive is still under investigation, Elliott said.

The slaying was the sixth of the year in Jefferson County and the third inside the Pine Bluff city limits. It was also the first in Pine Bluff since Jan. 26 when Sidney Farver Jr., 21, drove to Church’s Chicken at West 16th Avenue and Cherry Street after police responded to the area of West 18th Avenue and Elm Street in response to a report of shots being fired.

Farver had been shot and he was taken to JRMC where he was pronounced dead of apparent multiple gunshot wounds.

No arrests have been made in that case and police are offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of the person or persons responsible.
