One man was arrested and a second escaped after a reported shoplifting attempt turned into a robbery Friday evening.
Donovan Branch, 29, reportedly fought with a store clerk at University Deli, 1019 N. University Drive, after the clerk tried to stop him from taking an energy drink, Detective James Williams reported in a probable cause affidavit.
Deputy Prosecutor Maxie Kizer said the clerk reported that two men tried to take a can of Red Bull and when he tried to detain the men, one of them, later identified as Branch, resisted, losing his sweatshirt in the process.
Williams reported that the clerk was able to hold Branch until police arrived and store video confirmed that Branch and the clerk had been involved in an altercation.
Kizer said Branch, whose address was listed as being in Brinkley, had prior convictions for second-degree battery and commercial burglary and appeared to be on parole.
Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $10,000 bond for Branch after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with robbery.
Branch said he would hire his own attorney and was told to come back to court Dec. 10.
