PB man arrested in Friday night shooting

An investigation into a reported shooting Friday night in central Pine Bluff resulted in the arrest of a man police said was responsible for the incident.

Eric Holmes, 34, allegedly shot Toney Gilbert, who was found on a couch inside a residence in the 800 block of West Eighth Avenue after officers responded to a reported shooting.

During a court hearing Monday, Deputy Prosecutor Maxie Kizer said Gilbert identified Holmes as the person who allegedly shot him, telling officers Holmes had “chased him and fired several shots at him.’

Detective James Huff reported that the incident allegedly happened after a burglary a few days earlier. Huff said Holmes believed Gilbert was a suspect in the burglary.

Police reported that Gilbert was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center after the shooting for what were described as “non-life threatening injuries.”

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $75,000 bond for Holmes after ruling that prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with first-degree battery and with committing a terroristic act.

Bridgforth also ordered Holmes to have no contact with Gilbert until the case is settled, and told him to come back to court April 29.

The Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent Holmes.
