Man suspected in beating arrested Wednesday

Pine Bluff police arrested a suspect Wednesday in the alleged beating of a Pine Bluff man last week.

Lee Smith, 37, allegedly hit Walter Young in the head and shoulders after Young told Smith he did not have any money, Deputy Prosecutor Maxie Kizer said during a court hearing for Smith on Thursday.

Detective Jerry Lambert said in a probable-cause affidavit that police were sent to the Regency Inn at 2100 E. Harding Ave., at 6:15 a.m. on April 26 and talked with Young, who said Smith had come to his door and wanted money, then produced a pistol and started beating Young.

Kizer said police found a blood trail from Young’s room indicating that Young had tried to run for help after the incident.

Smith was arrested late Wednesday, according to the intake log at the adult detention center.

Kizer said Smith had prior convictions from Helena, West Helena and West Memphis, and an ACIC (Arkansas Crime Information Center) printout that covered 20 pages of failures to appear and other charges.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $50,000 bond for Smith after ruling that prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with first-degree battery and burglary.

She also ordered Smith to have no contact with Young until the case is settled, and told him to come back to court June 13.

Smith said he would hire his own attorney.
