Man could face 2 counts of murder in death of pregnant wife, authorities say


A Jefferson County man is expected to face two counts of capital murder in the death of his wife who was pregnant.

George Cage, 31, is being held at the county detention center following the stabbing death of his wife, Mendi Bell, 37, Jan. 19.

The state Crime Lab has confirmed that Bell was pregnant, Major Lafayette Woods Jr. of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday night.

The sheriff’s office will ask the prosecutor to charge Cage with two counts of capital murder.

On Tuesday, Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth ruled prosecutors had probable cause to charge Cage with capital murder in the stabbing death of Bell at a house at 9704 Huntley Trail.
