A Pine Bluff woman was shot Tuesday night and members of her family wrestled the alleged shooter to the ground and held him until police arrived.
Markeith Harris, 30, told police he and his girlfriend had gotten into an argument and he was “jumped on by members of the woman’s family,” Detective Jacqueline Stevenson said in a probable cause affidavit.
At 9:16 p.m. police were sent to 3211 Fair Oaks Drive in response to a reported shooting and when they arrived, found Harris and the victim, Dell Connor, 52, on the ground.
Harris told Stevenson he “pulled the gun to try and scare” the people he said were jumping on him and “the gun accidentally went off, shooting Connor.”
Connor was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center by ambulance, and according to a spokeswoman at JRMC, Connor was transferred to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock for treatment of her injuries. A UAMS spokesman was unable to provide a condition report for Connor on Wednesday.
Neither the police report nor the probable cause affidavit indicated the nature of the injuries Connor received or where she was shot.
Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $25,000 bond for Harris after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with first-degree battery.
Bridgforth ordered Harris to have no contact with Connor until the case is settled and told him to come back to court March 13.
The Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent Harris.
