Jefferson County man arrested after trying to cash check reported stolen

A Jefferson County man was arrested Monday after he allegedly tried to cash a stolen check.

Bryan McDonel, 33, was taken into custody at the Walmart Supercenter after an employee called the company named on the check and was told the check had been stolen, Detective Brad Vilches said in a probable cause affidavit.

Vilches reported that McDonel had formerly worked for the Little Rock company. While the owner was checking his credit card receipts, he noticed several unauthorized transactions that he believed McDonel had been responsible for.

In addition to the $1,300 check that McDonel tried to cash, the company said a number of other checks were missing.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $25,000 bond for McDonel on Tuesday after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with forgery.

Bridgforth appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent McDonel and told him to come back to court Jan. 15.
