Female guard at Cummins arrested for allegedly smuggling contraband

A female guard at the Arkansas Department of Correction’s Cummins Unit was arrested Saturday after other guards reported finding tobacco and rolling papers on her person.

ADC spokeswoman Shea Wilson said Correction Officer Two Patricia A. Appleton, 46, was searched as she came into work around 6 p.m.

“Everybody has go go through security,” Wilson said. “Everybody is patted down.”

A guard found about 6.6 ounces of tobacco and one package of TOPS rolling papers in a clear plastic bag hidden on Appleton’s person, Wilson said.

Appleton was arrested and taken to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department, where she was booked in and transferred to McGehee because Lincoln County does not have a facility to hold female prisoners.

Appleton, who was hired by the ADC on May 14, 2012, has been terminated, Wilson said.

She is charged with furnishing a prohibited article into a correctional facility, a Class C felony.
