Driver arrested for DWI allegedly driving stolen truck

A Jefferson County man who was arrested for DWI on Wednesday was allegedly driving a truck that had been reported stolen.

Kevin Barnes, 41, said he had been given permission to use the truck after his own vehicle ran out of gas, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Investigator Mickey Buffkin reported in a probable cause affidavit presented in court Friday.

Deputy Prosecutor Maxie Kizer said authorities stopped the truck because it was being driven without the headlights on. Barnes was the driver.

Buffkin reported that the truck was registered to a business on Arkansas 104 and the owner of that business said they did not know Barnes and had not given him permission to use the vehicle.

Kizer said Barnes is currently on probation from Grant County.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $10,000 bond for Barnes after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with theft by receiving.

Kearney appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent Barnes and told him to come back to court Dec. 7.
