Convicted felon arrested after gun found

A roadblock by Pine Bluff police early Thursday morning resulted in the arrest of a man on a gun related charge.

Brandon Sanders, 24, who is currently on probation and has drug and weapons related charges pending, was sitting in the back seat of a car that was stopped at Miramar and Catalpa streets at 12:30 a.m., Detective James Williams reported in a probable cause affidavit.

The report indicated Williams was in a 1999 Nissan and officers saw him apparently “trying to hide something.”

Sanders and two other men who were in the car were taken out and police reported finding marijuana and a .40-caliber handgun in the backseat where Sanders had been sitting.

According to prosecutor’s files, Sanders was placed on probation after entering a plea of guilty to second-degree domestic battery stemming from a 2008 arrest and is set for trial in January on charges of simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms and possession of a controlled substance with purpose to deliver that were filed after an arrest in 2010.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $50,000 cash only bond for Sanders after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Sanders said he would hire his own attorney and was told to come back to court Nov. 29.
