Burglar alarm at school results in arrest

An alarm at Greenville Elementary School on West 10th Avenue Sunday night resulted in the arrest of a man found hiding in a bathroom.

Joseph Ford, 43, reportedly told police he had no place to stay so he broke into the school to find a place to sleep, Detective Larry Gailey said in a probable cause affidavit.

Deputy Prosecutor Maxie Kizer said police were sent to the school at 6:30 p.m. and found a window broken on the east side of the building when they arrived.

Kizer said Ford had prior convictions from Union County and had served time in the penitentiary.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $10,000 bond for Ford after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with commercial burglary.

Kearney appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent Ford and told him to come back to court Dec. 17.
