Bond set in alleged arson

A $5,000 bond was set Tuesday for a Pine Bluff woman accused of setting fire to a garage Monday night.

Jefferson County Judge Kim Bridgforth set the bond after ruling that prosecutors had probable cause to charge Phyllis Carter, 61, with arson and criminal mischief.

Police Detective Jacqueline Stevenson reported that Carter was arrested after police were sent to the 1500 block of Cumberland Avenue at 9:30 p.m.

The owner of the house told police Carter had broken windows of his garage, then threw lit pieces of paper through the windows, setting the garage on fire.

Stevenson reported that Carter was intoxicated when she was located and admitted breaking the windows, but didn’t remember setting anything on fire.

Police reported finding butane and paper towels in Carter’s vehicle.

In addition to setting the bond, Bridgforth ordered Carter to have no contact with the alleged victim, and told her to come back to court March 15.

Carter said she would hire her own attorney.
