A female jailer at the adult detention center received a broken nose and other injuries Wednesday when she was beaten by a prisoner at the jail.

Ramon McGraw, 23, reportedly struck Cpl. Christy Brooks in the face several times with his fist when she tried to handcuff him, Deputy Prosecutor Maxie Kizer said Friday during a court hearing for McGraw.

Sheriff’s Investigator Randy Jackson reported that Brooks had gone to assist another jailer who was having problems with McGraw, and he refused several commands she gave him, including a command to turn around so he could be handcuffed.

Jackson reported that after McGraw struck Brooks, two other jailers sprayed him with short bursts of pepper spray and they forced him to the floor where he was handcuffed.

Kizer said Brooks received a broken nose, black left eye and swelling around the eye.

McGraw was being held at the adult detention center after being accused of stabbing a female guard at the Department of Correction and was awaiting a mental hearing.

At Kizer’s request, Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set bond for McGraw at $100,000 cash only after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with second-degree battery.

Kearney appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent McGraw, and told him to come back to court Aug. 10.
