Walker announces bid for mayor

Alderman and businesswoman Thelma Walker announced Friday she will run for mayor of Pine Bluff in the November General Election.

Walker has lived in Pine Bluff for most of her life, owning several businesses. She has owned Pine Bluff Adult Daycare since 1999.

“When elected, my goal will be to improve Pine Bluff so that we will be ‘Pine Bluff Proud,’” Walker said in a press release.

Walker served six years on the Civil Service Commission and has served on the City Council since 2005.

Walker said she will work hard to bring jobs to Pine Bluff by working with the City Council to hire an economic development employee whose job will be to recruit businesses and industry to locate in Pine Bluff. She also plans to hire a grantwriter to search for and oversee grant funds for the city.

“We have missed millions of dollars available to us by not applying or by missing deadlines for application,” Walker said. “That will be a thing of the past. Community Development will be managed as it was meant to be: for people in need and to improve the community of Pine Bluff.”

Walker said she has a good working relationship with city department heads and will continue working with the City Council to get things done, as well as working with the Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Alliance of Jefferson County, churches and pastors, the business community and other agencies.

“We must all work hard, work smart, think and speak positive to improve our city,” Walker said.

Walker is a member of Allen Temple AME Church, Social and Arts Club, the NAACP and Just Friends Club. She has five children and five grandchildren.

The other candidates who have announced they are running for mayor are: Peter Daniels, Clarence Davis, Debe Hollingsworth, John James and Steven Mays. Current Mayor Carl A. Redus Jr. has not announced whether he intends to seek re-election
