Timeline of Chancellor Lawrence A. Davis Jr. at UAPB


• 1943 — Lawrence A. Davis Sr. becomes president of AM&N College

• 1958 — Lawrence A. Davis Jr. graduates from AM&N with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He goes on to earn his master’s and doctoral degrees from other universities.

• ’60s — Lawrence A. Davis Jr. starts working at AM&N

• 1972 — AM&N College merges with the University of Arkansas System to become UAPB. Lawrence A. Davis Sr. is the first chancellor

• 1973 — Lawrence A. Davis Sr. retires

• 1986 — Lawrence A. Davis Jr. is a finalist for chancellor, but Charles A. Walker is ultimately hired

• 1991 — Davis is named dean of the School of Science and Technology at UAPB, after previously serving as dean of Arts and Sciences, professor of mathematics and physics and overseeing the Honors College

• June 1991 — Chancellor Charles A. Walker resigns amid controversy after it was revealed that UAPB has a $3 million deficit; Davis applies to succeed him

• October 1991 — Davis and three other candidates are finalists to replace Walker out of more than 100 applicants

• November 5, 1991 — Davis is hired

• 1992 — Davis fills many of the 22 empty positions he inherited when taking over the university

• 2003 —UAPB awarded $50,000 grant to begin planning and establishing STEM programs that encourage students to focus on careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

• 2003 — UAPB Golden Lions football stadium completed

• Spring 2005 — University Museum and Cultural Center established.

• January 2009 — UAPB Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South participates in Inaugural Parade for President Barack Obama

• May 2010 — First Lady Michelle Obama is UAPB Spring Commencement Speaker

• April 2011 — UAPB TV begins online streaming service to enable viewing of station from anywhere in the world

• November 2011 — UAPB Aquaculture and Fisheries Doctoral Program receives full accreditation
