Sheriff’s officials attend emergency management training


Four officials with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department recently completed an Emergency Management Incident Command System training course.

Sheriff Gerald Robinson, Chief Deputies Stanley James and Greg Bolin, and Operations Commander Major Lafayette Woods Jr. attended the four-day, 32-hour course conducted in Pine Bluff.

The course was sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management and the Department of Homeland Security.

Woods said the Incident Command System (ICS) is a standardized, on-screen, all-hazards incident management approach that allows for the integration of facilities, equipment, personnel, procedures, and communications operating within a common organizational structure. It will enable various agencies and jurisdictions to adopt a coordinated response to emergency situations and establishes policies and procedures for managing responses.

ICS commonly is structured to facilitate activities in the areas of command, operations, planning, logistics and finance/administration.

“ICS would have been very helpful during our efforts in Dumas in 2007,” Woods said.

He was referring to the tornado on Feb. 24, 2007, which hit Dumas and destroyed or damaged many homes and businesses. Forty people were hurt. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department responded to Desha County to provide personnel and resources during the cleanup and recovery efforts.
