Pine Bluff native Shalita Heard received the once in a lifetime opportunity to help a teenager reach her goal on the television show MADE, which aired on MTV Wednesday and Thursday.
During the show, Heard gave Mackenzie Jones a makeover and styled her hair. Jones’ dream was to become a cheerleader.
Heard, the owner of Iconique Hair at Little Rock, was contacted by MTV for her services, she said.
Heard said Jones had really curly hair and had a hard time keeping it under control, so Heard gave her a unique style.
With a cheer coach helping and motivating her, and a makeover from Heard, Jones was able to live her dream.
The experience was life changing for both the stylist and her client, Heard said
She was doing much more than changing Jones’ appearance, she was helping Jones to become more outgoing and positive.
According to Heard, Jones was grateful.
“She was very energetic and was just a sweetheart,” Heard said.
After she finished her hair, Jones and her parents began to cry. Heard said later Jones wrote on her Facebook wall telling her that if it were not for Heard, her dreams would not have come true.
Heard was excited to see the episode Wednesday and gathered her clients, styling team and friends to watch the show together. Also, a friend of Heard, Yolunda Hill, held a viewing party with friends at Chili’s in Pine Bluff.
Heard said doing the show was not about the money. She donated her services free. Heard said she is a natural giver and is always willing to help people in need. In an example of her giving spirit, Heard announced Wednesday morning on KARK Channel 4 News, that she would be giving away a makeover which included a massage and photo session.
“This is a story of inspiration. Not only did my dreams come true through this opportunity, someone else’s did too,” she said. “I work with clients who have lost hair due to cancer and various other things, so I feel like I’m changing people’s lives.”
Along with owning her own salon, Heard is also a business matchmaker for EWomen Network in Little Rock. She helps women promote their businesses so they can become successful.
According to MTV’s website, the television show MADE works with teenagers who are too shy or lack the confidence to try something they have always wanted to try, such as becoming prom queen or class president, and giving them the opportunity to live their dream.
The episode will be available on MTV’s website July 13 for anyone who missed the airing of the episode.
