Smart Motors, one of Pine Bluff’s oldest firms, is moving the bulk of the firm’s automobile and truck dealerships to White Hall, the company’s general manager acknowledged.
The company is seeking a conditional use permit for slightly less than 15 acres from the White Hall Planning Commission on Monday to develop Smart Auto Mall north of U.S. 270, immediately west of Interstate 530, according to the commission’s meeting agenda.
Roger Smart Jr. said that construction is scheduled to begin in late July and will include 70,000 square feet in three buildings. He projected construction should take 12 months.
The sales and service for General Motors products will be housed in the largest of the three buildings, with Honda and Hyundai each occupying separate facilities.
The plans submitted to White Hall planners call for parking for 1,229 vehicles, including 637 on display.
The move will involve the company’s Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Hyundai operations at 515 W. 5th Ave. and the Honda dealership at 3100 Auto Drive off East Harding. The firm’s Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep operations will remain at 2400 E. Harding, Smart said.
Some 100 jobs will be involved in the move, he added, with the number probably growing at the Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep operation.
The move is part of the company’s growth plans, Smart said, noting the firm acquired the Buick and GMC dealership at Malvern in late May.
Smart Auto Mall will allow the company to meet image requirements established by auto manufacturers, Smart said, with state-of-the-art facilities.
The company will continue to operate the facilities on West Fifth “to sell pre-owned vehicles,” he said.
Smart Motors has been in operation in Pine Bluff since 1906.
