Sheriff’s Office looking for pictures of former sheriffs

With construction under way for the new Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office building adjacent to the adult jail, the department is looking to recognize all those who have served as sheriff since the county was founded in 1830.

Thirty different individuals have worn the badge as sheriff, including one who served twice, and the department is looking for pictures of those individuals.

Currently, pictures are available only of Sheriff Gerald Robinson and former Sheriffs Boe Fontaine, the late W.C. “Dub” Brassell, the late Samuel Mitchell “Sam” Taylor and the first sheriff of the county, Creed Taylor.

Department Operations Commander Major Lafayette Woods Jr. said if pictures of the others can be obtained, they will be posted on the department’s website, and hopefully, be displayed in the new department building.

Anyone with pictures of the former sheriffs can contact Woods at the Sheriff’s Office at 541-5351 or on his cell phone at 329-5652. Pictures can be emailed to Woods at or dropped off at the sheriff’s office at the county courthouse where they will be copied and returned to the owners.
