Police investigate infant’s death

Pine Bluff police are conducting an investigation into what was called a “suspicious death” Friday morning.

Deputy Chief Kelvin Sergeant said a 2-week-old infant died at Jefferson Regional Medical Center after being taken to the hospital early Friday.

Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley identified the infant as Tamaracus Benjamin Jr., who was pronounced dead by a doctor in the emergency room at 7:40 a.m.

The infant was found unresponsive at an apartment at the Pine Terrace Apartments at 2601 S. Olive St., and was taken to the hospital where he died.

Both Sargent and Kelley said the body would be sent to the Arkansas State Medical Examiner’s Office in Little Rock to determine “cause and manner of death.”
