JPs to meet in special session over public safety budgets

A special meeting of the Jefferson County Quorum Court has been called for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss 2013 budgets for the adult jail, juvenile detention center and the Public Safety sales tax.

Both the adult jail and juvenile detention center have been operating on extensions of their 2012 budgets that will expire at the end of the March.

The same situation applies to the Public Safety sales tax, which provides funding for the sheriff’s department, juvenile detention center and rural fire protection.

Proposed appropriation ordinances were not available for the three budgets Monday afternoon, but figures submitted by Sheriff Gerald Robinson called for an expenditure of $1,831,424 for the juvenile detention center and $4.402,806 for the adult jail. Both of those figures are $100,000 less than Robinson originally requested.

No figures were provided for dividing the sales tax funds.
