Investigation opened into death at Tucker

Jefferson County authorities have opened an investigation into the death of a woman whose body was found Tuesday afternoon in a ditch at Tucker.

Coroner Chad Kelley identified the victim as Brenda Butler, 50. Kelley pronounced Butler dead at 1:20 p.m., just over an hour after sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a body in a ditch.

Major Lafayette Woods Jr., said the initial call was received at 12:23 p.m., and reported an unresponsive female at 207 Vine St.

Woods said when deputies arrived, they spoke to two witnesses who said they saw Butler walking down the street, then suddenly fall into a ditch. When the witnesses tried to help Butler out of the ditch, she reportedly became combative, then non-responsive and medical personnel were called.

Both Kelley and Woods said there were no obvious indications of foul play in Butler’s death.

Kelley said late Tuesday afternoon that Butler’s body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office on Wednesday for an autopsy to determine “cause and manner of death.”
