Jefferson County will mark National Falls Prevention Awareness Day with a health fair from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at Saracen Landing.
There will be free health screenings for cholesterol, glucose, bone density and neuropathy. There will be free exercise sessions, including Tai Chi Easy, Strong Women, Balance For Life and Fit in Ten.
Door prizes will be distributed, including exercise DVDs, Centers for Disease Control exercise manuals and a produce basket from the Carpenter’s local farmers.
The regular farmer’s market activities will be going on at the same time as the health fair.
Jefferson County is joining the Arkansas Falls Free Coalition and 44 other states in celebrating Falls Prevention Awareness Day on the first day of the fall season.
This year’s theme, Standing Together to Prevent Falls, seeks to unite professionals, older adults, caregivers and family members to play a part in raising awareness and preventing falls in the older adult population.
Theresa Horton, South Centeral Center on Aging in Pine Bluff director of education, said, “We need to stand together as a community and raise awareness of preventive measures that can keep seniors safe in Arkansas.”
Every 15 seconds, an older adult is seen in an emergency department for a fall-related injury, according to a press release. Nationally, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for those aged 65 and over. The chances of falling and being seriously injured in a fall increase with age.
Experts recommend a physical activity plan with balance, strength training and flexibility components; getting a fall risk assessment; having medications reviewed periodically; getting eyes checked annually; and making sure the home environment is safe and supportive.
Partners for the event include the South Central Center on Again, Trinity Village Retirement Community, Jefferson Regional Medical Center, the Arkansas Falls Free Coalition, University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, Jefferson County Extension Services and the Governor’s Council on Fitness.
