Female suspect shot by off-duty officer identified

A 34-year-old Pine Bluff woman is being held without bond at the W.C. “Dub” Brassell Adult Detention Center after she allegedly tried to hit an off-duty police officer with her vehicle while the officer was trying to arrest her for shoplifting Friday.

According to the intake log at the adult detention center, Crystal Gonzales is being held on probable cause of aggravated robbery and fleeing pending an expected court appearance in District Court on Monday.

Police spokeswoman Lt. JoAnn Bates said the officer, who has not been identified, fired a shot at the vehicle driven by Gonzales after Gonzales refused orders to stop.

Gonzales drove away after the confrontation but was apprehended without incident at the intersection of East 38th Avenue and Ohio Street a short time later. She received a minor injury to the arm as a result of the shot and was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center where she was treated and released.

The incident occurred at Dillard’s at The Pines mall at about 7 p.m. The officer was working security at the store.

Bates said as per department policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending an investigation by the department’s Office of Professional Standards.
