Correctional officer arrested; allegedly tried to smuggle pot into prison

Lavon Tensley Jr., 21, a guard at the Arkansas Department of Corrections Varner Unit, was arrested by the Arkansas State Police on Thursday after allegedly trying to smuggle marijuana into the prison.

ADC spokeswoman Shea Wilson said Tensley was routinely searched in the entrance building when he reported to work. A female guard thought she smelled marijuana on Tensley and called a superior officer to search Tensley more thoroughly, Wilson said.

Wilson said the officer found that Tensley, who was wearing several pair of underwear, had marijuana wrapped in plastic concealed on his person. The marijuana weighed 16.1 grams, Wilson said.

Officers called the state police and Tensley was arrested by Trooper Oscar Bullard. Tensley was booked into the Lincoln County jail where he posted a $5,000 bond on Friday before being released. Tensley is tentatively charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a Class B felony.

Wilson said Tensley, who has been working at the ADC since February of this year, will be terminated.
