City seeks opinions on earlier bar closings

The City of Pine Bluff’s web site is featuring a question on Mayor Debe Hollingsworth’s proposal to have Pine Bluff bars and alcohol-selling private clubs close at 1 a.m. instead of up to 5 a.m.

Hollingsworth and Interim Police Chief Jeff Hubanks say that trouble calls and traffic problems double at the establishments between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., preventing officers from focusing on neighborhood patrols.

A spokesperson for the mayor said Monday night that the web poll is an effort by the mayor to receive public input on an ordinance calling for the earlier closing. The measure has already received two readings and is due for a final reading and possible vote at the council’s next meeting on Aug. 5.
