The Commercial’s annual fundraiser collected more than $5,000 to help needy children in the four Jefferson County schools.
Thanks to the generosity of the community, the Christmas Card Fund total for the 25th year was $5,706.
The newspaper is thankful to those who participated this year. Since 1987, readers have contributed thousands of dollars to the fund which goes to the Pine Bluff, Dollarway, Watson Chapel and White Hall school districts to help children who may need basic essentials.
None of the money is kept for administrative costs by The Commercial.
Through the years, we’ve heard stories of how the money was used to help buy prescriptions that families couldn’t afford for their children or to purchase uniforms, a basic need in most area schools. Eye glasses, shoes or even coats have been items on the list of some school children whose families had no place else to turn.
By giving to the newspaper’s fundraiser, the community is once again helping area children.
Donors who gave at least $1 by the deadline will have their names on a community Christmas card in today’s edition of The Commercial.
