Altheimer woman dies in automobile crash

An Altheimer woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon on the Free Bridge, also known as U.S. 79 North.

Cynthia Pitts, 50, was pronounced dead at 4:41 p.m. by Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley.

Pitts was a passenger in the vehicle driven by Ellis Pitts, 53, when the accident occurred along a bridge embankment. Her body will be sent to the state Crime Lab to determine cause and manner of death, Kelley said.

State Police Cpl. Marlon Briggs reported that the accident occurred at 4:09 p.m.

Ellis Pitts was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer southbound on U.S. 79 when the vehicle veered across to left side of the roadway, striking the concrete side of the bridge. It then veered to the outside lane, striking the guard rail, traveling across the bridge and bouncing along the rail, Briggs said.

Ellis Pitts was taken to the hospital with apparently minor injuries, Briggs said.
