3 injured at Island Harbor business

Three people were injured while working on a roof of a building shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday in the Island Harbor area at Pine Bluff.

Two people were taken to Little Rock hospitals — one in critical condition was taken by Med Flight, which had to land the helicopter at Golden Lion stadium for closest access to the injured worker, and the other by ambulance. A third person was transported to Jefferson Regional Medical Center at Pine Bluff, said Major Lafayette Woods Jr. of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The crew was working at Thompson Pine Bluff Import Export at 509 Island Harbor Marina Road, now doing business as Gavilon Grain - Pine Bluff, a company based at Omaha, Neb.

“Initial indications are that a truss on a roof gave way and the workers fell from the roof,” Woods said.

At 2:53 p.m., deputies were called about an industrial construction accident. Upon arrival, they found three people hurt. The company said it would do an investigation to determine what happened, Woods said.

The import/export business is formerly owned by Ed Thompson, who said Saturday that he sold the business two years ago. Gavilon Grain is constructing a new building, Thompson said.

A spokesman for Gavilon Grain couldn’t be reached for comment Saturday afternoon.
