<p>Sterling Marlin, a rigger with Tanner’s Crane Service from Malvern, hooks up to the lighted cross that sat atop a tower at the First United Methodist Church on Sixth Avenue so that it could be removed. The cross, which was erected almost 58 years ago, was removed because of damage to the tower, officials said. Church leaders decided to remove the tower and cross rather than make costly repairs. The tower was established to broadcast the church’s sermons on KATV. The cross was added as a symbolic gesture so that it would be a beacon on the Pine Bluff horizon, officials said Tuesday.
