Watson Chapel High School senior Andrew Fleming was recently named a National Merit Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
The program is an annual academic competition conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a not-for-profit organization established in 1955. More than 1.5 million students in more than 22,000 high schools across the country entered the competition by taking the PSAT/NMSQT exam in the fall of 2012.
Semifinalists are the highest-scoring entrants in each state and represent less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors.
Fleming is the only National Merit Semifinalist in Jefferson County and is the son of Rev. David Fleming of First United Methodist Church in Pine Bluff and Karla Hefty. Fleming is a member of the Watson Chapel Quiz Bowl Team, the Model United Nations, the Model Arab League, the choir, band and BETA club.
Fleming is also active in his church youth group.
