Bonnie Savage of Pine Bluff has organized a Stop the Killing Walk-a-Thon that will take place Sunday at 2 p.m., beginning at the parking lot of New Fellowship Baptist Church at 16th Avenue and Cedar Street and ending at 13th Avenue and Cherry Street.
Savage is a community advocate who said that the idea for the walk came from her desire to see residents stand up to the violence in the community.
“Our theme is Too Many Murders in the City: Stop the Killing,” Savage said. “A lot of close friends of mine have lost their sons to the violence in Pine Bluff. We are registered voters and we need to get the city’s attention. They need to stop the breaking and entering and stop the killing.”
Savage said that she has received commitments from all nine candidates for Pine Bluff mayor to participate in the event.
“Several area ministers will be there and we are still making calls inviting others to attend,” Savage said.”I spoke with Virginia Hymes at Pine Bluff High School and several of her art students will be making signs for people to carry.”
Savage said that the Pine Bluff Police Department will be blocking off the walk route to traffic for the duration of the event.
“We’re expecting to have over 100 people participate in the walk,” Savage said.
