Wal-Mart to make presentation to UAPB’s band

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South will receive a special presentation from Wal-Mart Stores at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 9 on the parking lot of Golden Lion stadium.

The presentation will be awarded during the Wal-Mart Heart event for Jenkins Memorial Center adults. The public is invited to attend.

The donation was made possible by the work of Allyson Hay, a member of a team of 8,000 Wal-Mart truck drivers who participate in programs like the Wal-Mart Heart program. This is her last year on the team.

“It was the right time and a great opportunity and Wal-Mart was receptive to it,” Hay said.

A program created by the truckers, the Wal-Mart Heart program gives drivers an opportunity to lift the spirits of hundreds of children or adults with chronic medical conditions or special needs.

John Graham, director of bands at UAPB said the band played during a previous Wal-Mart Heart event early last fall and was greatly impacted.

“We had the opportunity to play for one of the best audiences,” Graham said. “They truly appreciated us being there.”

The marching band has made appearances at the Gateway Classic, professional football games, appeared on national television and countless “Battle of the Bands” competitions and marched during the Inaugural Parade for President Barack Obama.
