UAPB named finalist in Home Depot grant contest

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff has been named a finalist in The Home Depot’s 2013 “Retool Your School” campus improvement grant program.

The program is designed to reinvigorate Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Finalists are competing for $225,000 in grants for on-campus improvements.

Supporters can visit to vote for their favorite school and sustainable campus improvement project. One $50,000 Tier 1 major grant, 12 Tier 2 $10,000 minor grants and one $25,000 Campus Pride for the school receiving the most online votes and social media activity, as assessed by The Home Depot, will be awarded. Winners will be announced on May 3, 2013.

The proposed improvement projects at UAPB are based on the amount of grant awarded: the first sub-grant for $50,000 was written for lamp posts to be installed on the campus length of L.A. “Prexy” Davis Drive (from the stadium to Baptist student union or as far as $50,000 will stretch); the second tier, called Campus Pride, for $25,000 was written to have the history of the Fine Arts (Music, Theatre, and Art Departments) told utilizing the tools of technology; and the third ($10,000) for the addition of architectural and landscaping structures (flower beds, raised beds etc.) around the center of campus to beautify the campus and accent the W.E. O’Bryant Bell tower.

Online voting began February 18 and will end on April 15, at 10:59 pm Central.
