Tiffany Easter of Sheridan has been named one of Arkansas’ top two youth volunteers of 2013 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program that honors youth for outstanding acts of volunteerism.
Easter, a senior at Sheridan High School, was nominated for her efforts to free women and children being held in “Trokosi” slavery in Ghana, West Africa. By selling inscribed sunglasses and bracelets at community events and church gatherings, Tiffany and her sister raised enough money to purchase the freedom of nearly 60 women and children.
The other Arkansas winner was Blake Abston, an eighth-grade student at Pulaski Heights Middle School in Little Rock.
Easter and Abston each will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C..
